Applying for a Job

Adult social care is a rewarding and diverse sector that offers a range of opportunities for people who want to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Whether you are looking for a full-time, part-time, or flexible role, there is likely to be a job that suits you.

There are different roles and responsibilities, such as carer, senior carers, chefs, personal assistants, care coordinators, managers, and a variety of specialist roles.

For some roles you do not always need formal qualifications or experience to start but there will be plenty of opportunity to develop your skills and qualifications through your career. Many employers are looking to recruit people who have the right values and a caring mindset, and who are willing to learn and develop.

It is important to check the job description and person specification of the role you are applying for, and to match your qualifications and experience to the essential and desirable criteria. Even if you don’t completely meet the criteria, it might still be worth applying and you could win over a potential employer with enthusiasm and your other strengths.

The application process for a job in adult social care may vary depending on the employer and the role, but it usually involves the following steps:

Finding a suitable vacancy

You can search for jobs on a variety of job sites but we recommend looking at the national adult social care website, or you can contact local care providers directly.

Finding out more

It's always good to introduce yourself to a potential employer, to show that you are proactive and have genuine interest in the role that they are advertising. Use the opportunity to learn more about the role and the duties associated with it.

Completing an application form

Many care providers use application forms instead of CVs and cover letters. You should fill in the application form carefully and honestly, and provide relevant and specific examples of your skills, experience, and achievements. You should also check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and follow the instructions and guidelines of the form.

Not to worry if you have a gap in your career history or you’ve not yet found employment. Skills and experience from your personal life are transferable and those are just as valuable.
